IntroductionThe 2008 BAOMS Annual Scientific Meeting takes place from 2nd to 4th July 2008 in Cardiff City Hall. Final programme is now available The theme of the meeting is the practice of maxillofacial surgery under challenging circumstances and focuses in particular on maxillofacial injuries resulting from armed conflict. In the current international political climate, major disaster and bomb blast injuries are unfortunately increasingly demanding our attention and the main symposia will examine the lessons learnt from the management of maxillofacial trauma in Iraq, Afghanistan and the attacks on the UK mainland. International contributions include Mr Gary Parker (Mercyships), who in the Presidents Lecture will recount his maxillofacial experiences in over twenty years working in the poorest areas of West Africa from his base aboard the Mercyships, and Professor Maurice Mommaerts (Belgium) who delivers the 2008 Norman Rowe Lecture. Teaching symposia include the management of ballistic maxillofacial injuries in war and terrorist incidents, and interventional radiology in vascular lesions. There will be the usual mix of symposia and keynote lectures, including skull base access, craniofacial distraction and functional endoscopic sinus surgery, with eponymous lectures and short paper and poster presentations. Speakers include Professor Jim Ryan, Group Captain Andrew Monaghan, Dr Moni Kuriakose, Mr Hiroshi Nishikawa, Mr Stephen Dover, and Dr Ian McCafferty. Cardiff City Hall provides excellent conference facilities in a vibrant city which offers the visitor good hotels, excellent restaurants and theatre and of course the best of Welsh musical culture.
